Let's Quickly Play Kralizec's 8K Tetris, a MSX game competing in the MSXdev04 programming contest. MSXdev is a great initiative that originally had the goal to "celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the creation of the MSX standard". At the time MSX2 was dominant in the scene, as most games that were still being developed, focused on MSX2. The MSXdev competitions eventually ended up being so successful for the MSX(1) popularity, that nowadays the majority of games for our beloved homecomputer system seem to be for MSX instead of MSX2. In 2004 the second edition of MSXdev was held. Since MSXdev03 was cancelled, all donations for that contest were added to the fund for MSXdev04 instead. While MSXdev03 had only 3 submitted entries, the 2004 edition got 16 finished submissions! I'm planning to be playing through all of the MSXdev games during a non-narrated Let's (Quickly) Play MSXdev Games series. After Daniel Vik's Yahtzee, Dioniso's Penguin Race, and CEZ GS's Teki Paki, Guzuta Raster Leisure's Sink King's, HL-Soft's Chocobo Racing, we'll now get to play some oldskool Tetris in just 8K! Kralizec —consisting of Ramones, who did the programming, and Sutchan, who was responsible for the graphics & design— made 3 Tetris games. The first two, Tetris in 8K and Tetris Battle in 8K were released during this MSXdev04 contest. The last one is an improved version that combines these first two, and adds all sorts of extras. The MSXdev04 versions are available for download from http://msxdev.msxblue.com/?page_id=75 and their improved version can be downloaded from http://msxkralizec.msxcartridgeshop.c.... During this Let's Quickly Play, we will be playing Tetris in 8K. It's a simple and straightforward Tetris implementation. As the title implies, it fits an 8KB MSX ROM and is based on Aleksei Leonidovich Pazhitnov and Vadim Gerasimov's Те́трис. Unfortunately the title screen lacks any music, which surprised me a bit, as I am more used to the later version which has a nice variety of music. I guess the limited amount of time to finish the game is the cause of this. In-game there is a nice tune though, however it gets a bit boring after a while... Again, I guess I'm too spoiled with the later version. There's not much to say about the gameplay; it's your average Tetris. Controls respond quickly, and graphics are quite fresh (though of course limited by the MSX1 palette). For those unfamiliar with Tetris (shame on you!), the objective of the game is clear lines with the various shaped tiles, each consisting of 4 bricks. Think of it as trying to pack the trunk of your car as tightly as possible, with the difference that your bags don't disappear when you've filled a row, while the bricks do! Overall it's a nice Tetris clone for the MSX. Nice music, albeit a bit repetitive after a while, and not nearly as effective at getting stuck in your head as the tunes of Nintendo's Tetris. Controls are pleasant and responsive enough to nudge that one brick right into place, allowing you to make up for some misplaced tiles. As usual, this recording was made using the cross-platform open source MSX emulator openMSX. For more information, see the official openMSX project page at http://openmsx.sourceforge.net/ This recording was made with 0.8.1 Development Build 12178, available from http://openmsx.fixato.net, home of the unofficial development builds of openMSX for Mac OS X and Windows x86 & x64. I used the Toshiba HX-10 configuration for this recording.
