It's time for a thrilling game! Hold onto your hats, grab a litre of your favourite drinks and make sure you have a large bowl of popcorn within an arm's reach! This will be the most exciting MSX recording I've ever done! The next 15 minutes you'll be glued to your seat while you watch this spectacular game of.. ... .. . YATHZEE! Yes, that's right, I recorded a full game of YATHZEE, the well-known dicegame (though spelled with th instead of ht) where you have to try and roll 5 dice to match each other and other common value combinations known from poker games. Are you ready to waste 15 minutes of your life? Then click play! :D It sure is less waste of your time than reading the mind-numbing, blood-boiling, comments on some forums (or youtube posts for that matter). Okay, about the game: This is a fairly simple chance game written in MSX BASIC. It was finished in May 1985 by R.E. Breetveld. It was submitted to a programming competition of which the results were published in the Dutch MSX Computer Magazine number 3. This issue can be downloaded from http://www.msxcomputermagazine.nl/arc... Since there was too little space left in the magazine, the programme was only available on disk and/or cassette through the MCM Programme Service. Through www.msxblue.com you will be able to find a download link. The game starts with asking how many players will be playing. I choose for 2 (not sure if 1 player is actually possible, so I played against myself). Next you'll have to hit the space bar to roll the dice. You can 'hold' a die by selecting it with the appropriate number key (1, 2, 3, 4, or 5). Personally I didn't find out how I can undo mistakes though.. but I'm quite sure it should be possible. (I guess I could dive in the listing, but I'm too lazy:P -- Mars2000 pointed out the 0 key undoes the selection.) Once you've made your selection, hit the space bar again. Repeat another time. At the end of throw ('worp') 3, you can choose where on your scoresheet you want to fill in your score with the up and down cursor keys. Make your selection with the right cursor key. Then the next player can hit space again. If you get a Yahtzee (5 the same dice) in your first or second throw, don't make the mistake I made (and corrected with openMSX's reverse :P) and don't hit space again. Select *all* the dice (hitting 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) and then hit space. Repeat till you can select Yathzee on the scoresheet. It's a nice and simple game and it used to keep my occupied when I was young, but I think that actually grabbing a set of dice might be quicker and more fun in the end. ;-) A bit more about the MCM magazine archive: The full archive of the old MCM magazines is slowly being uploaded to http://www.msxcomputermagazine.nl/ so be sure to periodically check for updates of this great initiative! :D
